Continuing are series on holistic health and wellness we will be looking at a centuries old herbal remedy for pain and inflammation known as arnica. Arnica montana, also known as Leopard's Bane, Bruisewort, Wolf's Bane, or Mountain Tobacco/smokeherb. Arnica is an herb that has earned it's reputation as a potent and dramatic healer and has stood the test of time. Arnica helps relieve the bodies aches and pains while assisting the body with it's natural healing processes as well.

Therapeutic uses for Arnica include treatments for a variety issues including:

  • bruising

  • black eye

  • septic conditions such as painful recurrent boils

  • muscle exhaustion from over-exertion (wonderful for a muscle rub)

  • altitude sickness

  • injuries, i.e. falls, sprains, blows, bruises and fractures

  • after surgery

  • sprains

  • painful joints

Arnica is an excellent choice for treating injuries and bruises. It can be given after a fall, muscle strain, injury, or surgery to help with pain management and to aid in the healing process. Arnica is a great remedy to keep in your first aid kit at home or on the go. It is used not only for pain, but is a wonderful anti-inflammatory. Arnica contains something called sesquiterpene lactose, this is what helps to reduce inflammation by dispersing fluids that build up in bruised and injured tissue. It helps to clean up inflammatory debris and lactic acids which in turn reduces swelling and helps relieve pain after injury or muscle strain.

Arnica is used either as a topical application or as a sublingual tablet. The oral remedy is made up of the whole fresh plant including the root. At the spa we carry the Arnicare line from Boiron in the oral tablet, we carry it in a single pack or 3 pack with each pack having 80 tablets. The Arnicare line is paraben-free, quickly absorbed, has no artificial additives or preservatives and uses only one active ingredient- Arnica montana.

Another great benefit of Arnica is that you can take it before physical activity or surgery to help you stay ahead of your pain. This helps you to effectively manage your pain without harsh pain medicines. If your going into surgery taking Arnica before can help to significantly reduce pain, swelling, and bruising after surgery which is essential to healing well.

If you have muscle pain, swelling, and soreness, Arnica is a safe, healthy, and natural way to help give you relief. We recommend Arnica to many of our massage clients as a way to ease their concerns between massage appointments. In fact many of our own massage therapists use Arnica to help with their own muscles aches, pains, and inflammation due to the highly physical aspect of providing massage therapy.

Next time you are looking for a homeopathic and holistic remedy for pain, swelling, and bruising pick up some Arnicare at Brilliant Bodywork and give it a try.
